Integration of a new ERP system in the Supply Chain process

Global retail without integration chaos: Boomi as the heart of the supply chain, end-to-end order management and data consistency.

O klientovi

The client specializes in the import and sale of goods within retail chains and marketplaces with a global scope. The client requested ERP integration as part of a larger project, which mainly focuses on the unification of the business process in the ERP area and the implementation of a new ERP system.

Výzva

The task of the integration was, among other things, to connect systems communicating through the exchange of files formatted in the EDI standard with a cloud ERP system that does not support the EDI process.
So the goal for us was to create an integration structure that:

  • It will contain precise transformation logic between EDI standards and services on REST API
  • It will be robust with respect to the amount of data processed
  • It will be easy to monitor because the client's vision is to manage global integrations within a single team while not generating a negative customer experience with possible technical deficiencies in the processing process and delivery of their orders

Problém

A client who delivers their goods globally communicates mostly within several different continents. Thus, each of the sites can use a completely different standard in EDI (ANSI X12, EDIFACT). Standards may also vary by industry. Therefore, an excellent knowledge of both specific standards and the systems and processes that use these standards within a given company is necessary.

If the new ERP system is used globally, then there may also be situations where it is necessary to exchange one type of records to integrate several different processes with completely different transformation (mapping) logic.

Another big challenge was client sales to end customers, through retail marketplaces.

Od analýzy k funkčnímu řešení

In this case, we strongly advised the client not to consider any development of the entire integration script and its execution, for example, in the runtime ERP application or the choice of an integration platform that does not support EDI standards. Even such a solution would be technically feasible, but it brings a high professional and time consuming development phase.

We approached several suppliers of integration platforms for the client, for which we verified their compatibility with EDI transformations in advance. The client opted for the Boomi platform, especially considering the availability of messaging directly in the platform, without the need to implement an additional solution.

The solution for the client developed on the Boomi platform consists of direct communication with the systems of its B2B customers and B2C intermediaries (online marketplaces, retail chains) regarding their orders, which are recorded in ERP. Furthermore, ERP communicates with warehouses in several countries and with 3PL companies. All end applications require communication using the EDIFACT standard, and Boomi fully ensures this communication not only technically, but also manages the entire process in time so that the individual phases of the process are properly connected to each other.
